The village of Zambujeira do Mar is perched above a cliff with white houses nestled around the main square. On the Alentejo coast, this village offers a family easygoing atmosphere that provides a relaxed environment to spend a few days on vacation.
The various outdoor restaurant tables facing the sun invite you to rest and enjoy the excellent local cuisine such as grilled fish, perch and octopus.
The delightful beaches with fine white sand are still one of the main attractions here. That and the music festival that is held every August in the Herdade da Casa Branca. During these days, hundreds of people flock to Zambujeira to listen to multiple concerts.
What to visit in Zambujeira do Mar
Fishing Port Entrada das Barcas
Just 3km north of Zambujeira do Mar you will find the Fishing Port Entrada da Barca.
An old fishing port that took advantage of the natural sea cove. When witnessing the boats’ entry and exit, it is impossible not to be astonished by the skill of these fishermen and the ease with which they meander through waves and rocks.
The most common form of fishing done here is by use of nets and traps (Covos), followed by diving and line fishing. Part of the local fisherman’s daily chores involves collecting sea urchins, limpets, mussels, and barnacles. With these, they complement their income and offer heavenly gastronomical dishes!
Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Mar (Our lady of the Sea)
Situated on the cliff-top overlooking the sea, this small and adorable chapel stands tall since 1966.
From this viewpoint, you can see at the opposite end the rocks known as the Palheirão.
Beaches around Zambujeira do Mar
Zambujeira do Mar Beach
At the foot of the village of Zambujeira do Mar, you will find the beach with the same name, elected as “Best urban beach”. With fine white sands and protected by the cliff, it is a popular place with holidaymakers.
The Zambujeira do Mar Beach offers excellent conditions for surfing and bodyboarding.
Alteirinhos Beach
Located south of Zambujeira do Mar, it is a peaceful and more reserved alternative to the bustling Praia da Zambujeira. Protected by a high cliff, access is via a staircase.
The southernmost part of the beach is classified as naturism. The rugged landscape offers natural barriers for some privacy.
Carvalhal Beach
Head south to discover Praia do Carvalhal. One of the few beaches on this coast that does not have a steep staircase leading to it. With a unique natural environment, amid a green valley and crossed by a small stream.
This attractive beach, surrounded by cliffs, is becoming increasingly sought after as an alternative to the most popular beaches in Zambujeira.
Machado Beach
After Praia do Carvalhal, you will find Praia do Machado. More withdrawn and calmer, there is still a 10-minute walk to get there. However, its stunning landscape will make it worthwhile.
