Nazaré beach, down by the village, is an extensive sand beach, shaped like a half moon, protected by a cliff

It was only in the 19th century, after the French invasions, that the population moved down and settled themselves beside the beach. Until then, the population lived in the high parts of the village such as the Sítio and Pederneira, which offered better protection against pirate attacks, a regular occurrence at the time

The village grew in an organized grid structure, with its streets perpendicular to the sea. Turning each corner, you will get a glimpse of the sea and feel a fresh salty breeze. A promenade stretches along the beach, ideal for walks and the meeting point of the Nazarenes

The village of Nazaré is chosen by many to spend their holidays. A lively and modern place that still retains its authenticity and traditions

Known as the “Sitio” (site) for being the place where, according to the 12th century legend,  Dom Fuas Roupinho, when chasing after a deer was about to fall down a cliff that was hidden due to intense fog. When he realised he was above a small grotto that housed the statue of Our Lady of Nazaré he called out for Our Lady to save him. He was miraculously saved and the horses’ hoofs can still be seen marked on the stone, Bico do Milagre (Point of Miracle). He then ordered a chapel to be built in that very place the Ermida de Memória

A little way away, in the 18th century, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré was built, in whose honour religious festivals are held in September.

The church was founded in the 14th century on the occasion of the arrival of King Ferdinand on a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Nazaré. The King not only ordered to do works in the Ermida da Memoria but also decided to construct a new and improved place of cult, since the Ermida did not have the capacity to receive the high number of devotees of Our Lady

The tradition of drying fish is used as a way to conserve the fish, such as horse mackerel,  sardines and octopus

The fish is first “cleaned”, washed and passed through a brine made with water and coarse salt. Finally, it is cut open lengthwise and spread on netting and placed in the sun. Drying lasts about 2 to 3 days, depending on the weather conditions.

Praia do Norte has become the mecca for big wave surfers. The ridge known as the canhão da Nazaré is responsible for creating some of the best 30 meters waves.

Nazare is increasingly sought after by surfers, photographers and tourists from around the world. The best place to observe is on Sítio da Nazaré, next to the lighthouse (Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo), on the north side.

The season normally starts in October and runs through to February

Local gastronomy is mostly of shellfish and fish specialities like fish stews – “caldeiradas” – and the dried fish.
